With her enthusiasm, expertise, and welcoming smile, she’s quickly become a favorite part of the recycling experience in Sedona.
Fran’s passion for sustainability runs deep. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Arizona and later completed a master’s in Sustainable Communities at Northern Arizona University. It was during her time at NAU that her dedication to waste reduction truly took root.
As NAU’s Sustainability Specialist for Campus Dining, Fran tackled the issue of single-use plastics head-on. She was instrumental in launching USEFULL, a reusable container system on campus, made possible through support from the NAU Green Fund. She also helped create a partnership with Pepsi Nackard Bottling Company to collect and recycle single-use bottles at every football home game—an initiative that continues today with NAU Campus Dining, the Office of Sustainability, and NAU Athletics. These projects not only diverted thousands of items from the landfill but also strengthened her commitment to waste mitigation. Fran went on to earn a graduate certificate in Sustainable Food Policy and Leadership from Arizona State University, further broadening her impact.
Now, she brings that same knowledge and passion to Sedona Recycles. As our weekend recycling educator and host, Fran helps community members understand what can and can’t be recycled locally, ensuring that more materials end up in the right place. Her goal is simple: to empower people with the information they need to recycle better.
When she’s not guiding recyclers, Fran enjoys digging holes (yes, literally!), bicycling around town, celebrating her love for mashed potatoes, and relaxing with a good soap opera.
